The Jianzhou cat is a domesticated cat named after the city of Jianzhou (now Jianyang City, Sichuan Province). It is tall and strong, very agile, and is a particularly good hunter. It is raised in large numbers in rural areas and is mainly used to catch mice. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was one of the four national specialties offered as tribute to the emperor of the time, so the Jianzhou cat, as a royal tribute, was well-known.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the local specialties offered to the emperor were mainly Jianchang duck, Gushi chicken, Songpan sand fox, and the last one was Jianzhou cat. Jianzhou cats became pets kept by the royal family, and some people began to imitate them. Some high-ranking officials and officials would come to Jianzhou to ask for Jianzhou cats, so that they could show that they were very interesting and elegant; some people also regarded it as a fashionable pet and gave it to their superiors or colleagues to build relationships with each other. During that period, the most popular gift was the Jianzhou cat. But perhaps it was the rise and fall. During the Cultural Revolution, the Jianzhou cat was denounced as a "bourgeois plaything" and was exterminated. In addition, few people are breeding Jianzhou cats now, so the number is much smaller, and fewer people are raising them.
The fur color of Jianzhou cats varies, most of them are mixed fur, and there are few pure fur colors. The records in ancient books describe the appearance of Jianzhou cats like this. "The cats in the world have two ears, but the Sichuan Jianzhou cat has overlapping outlines, two large and two small, which make up four ears." The so-called "four ears". It is said that the ear contours of Jianzhou cats overlap, and there are ears hidden inside the ears, so they have four ears. And it is said that all cats in the world have two ears, only Jianzhou cats have four ears.
Jianzhou cats are very loyal to their owners, very docile to their family and owners, but very unfriendly to strangers. If they find someone approaching their owners and family, they may wave their claws and scratch you.
