Scottish Fold Detailed Introduction

The Scottish Fold (scientific name: Felis silvestris catus, English name: Scottish Fold) is a cat breed with a genetic mutation in the ear. Since this cat breed was originally discovered in Scotland, it is named after its place of discovery and physical characteristics. This cat has a fold in the cartilage, which makes the ear bend forward and point to the front of the head. Because of this, this cat suffers from congenital orthopedic diseases and often uses a sitting posture to relieve pain.

The folded ear gene of the Scottish Fold cat is very strong. It can produce folded ear kittens by mating with any breed of cats, but this is not a true Scottish Fold cat, which is not recognized. The real Scottish Fold cat must be bred with American Shorthair or British Shorthair cats.

Scottish Fold cats are particularly peaceful and friendly to other cats and dogs. They are gentle, affectionate, loving, playful, and cherish family life. Their voices are soft. They are strong and this breed of cat is an excellent hunter.

Fold cats are born with a hereditary bone disease, Osteochondrodysplasia. Of course, not every fold cat will get sick, but there is a certain risk. In 1975, British Dr. OJackson's research pointed out that the cause of this genetic disease is caused by mating two cats with folded ears. He believes that as long as fold cats are mated with cats without folded ears, kittens with genetic diseases can be avoided. However, according to a study conducted by Dr. Richard Malik of the University of Sydney, Australia in 1999, all cats with folded ears have the chance to have some degree of bone and joint disease. The only way to avoid this genetic disease is to give up breeding folded ears. In addition, current cases show that kittens born from folded ears and non-folded ears will also get this genetic disease.

In 1973, the Scottish Fold was accepted by the CFA Association. From 1978 to the present, the only recognized breeding method for folded ears is to pair a folded ear with a standing ear folded ear cat.

Because the ears of Scottish Fold cats are folded, they need to be fed regularly every week with cat-specific ear drops to clean their ears, otherwise dirt will easily accumulate and they will suffer from ear mites.
