The Neapolitan Mastiff is an ancient breed with a slow, heavy bear-like gait. Like other mastiff breeds, it has a very large head.
Despite their aggressive history as fighting dogs, Neapolitan Mastiffs are quiet, gentle, and friendly animals, especially to familiar people. Neapolitan Mastiffs get along well with children if socialized early. They are accepting of strangers if there is no threat. They generally get along well with other dogs and household pets.
The Neapolitan Mafia was once a guard dog for the Italian Mafia. It will obey the orders of its owner, but it can bite people to death when it becomes ferocious. Most foreign countries classify these three fighting dogs as dangerous or aggressive breeds and restrict their breeding. Taiwan requires that these three dogs must wear masks, be accompanied by an adult, and be led by a rope chain no longer than 1.5 meters before entering and leaving public places. Hong Kong strictly implements restrictions on breeding, and does not allow these three dogs to go on the streets or enter and leave public places. Safety must be paid attention to when raising such dogs. The Neapolitan Mastiff has an innate sense of protection, which must be restrained and not indulged. From the time they are puppies, they must be taught how to interact with humans. They are quiet and comfortable companions. Although they do not need a lot of running, they need space to move around. They especially like children and are very obedient when they are with "their owners." This confident dog rarely stirs up trouble. Once a dispute occurs, they will never give in. Even a dog that has been systematically and well-trained will not become a completely obedient dog. In view of this situation, the Neapolitan Mastiff can only belong to rational and responsible dog owners who must have a certain understanding of dog behavior and the ability to train them. They often drool and require a lot of expenses to raise.
People have kept them since the Greek era until the Roman era. The ancestor dog is the mastiff used for war and competition. Their ancestors may be the gladiator dogs of ancient Rome. They were raised as pasture dogs and farm dogs in southern Italy. It was not until 1946 that the painter Piero Scanziani began to promote measures to save this breed. He established a dog breeder club to help it survive and reproduce. Purebred breeding did not begin until 1949. A few years ago, the news media called this dog "the chariot of ancient Rome", believing that they are the most reliable protectors and living alarms. Such reports immediately aroused the appetite of some people, who just needed a deterrent dog. Professional breeders who do business took advantage of people's mentality and raised some wrinkled and hideous monsters, which are disabled from the perspective of anatomy. This kind of dog is sold in large quantities in the market, but it didn't take long for this phenomenon to change, and the breeding trend gradually developed in the right direction.
