Terriers Group, which are short-haired small dogs, are very good at digging holes to help their owners hunt. Therefore, the name of the terrier comes from the Latin word "Terra", which means digging. Terriers are very good at digging holes. They are small in size and hunt small animals such as badgers, foxes, hares, otters, etc. that live in the soil or holes. They are characterized by beards and "bangs" that can cover their mouths.
Cairn Terrier is said to be the oldest terrier. Originated from the northwest of Scotland, it is mainly used to catch harmful animals such as rats. The word Cairn means a pile of stones. Some of the piles of stones in the Scottish Highlands are tombstones of ancient Romans. Because it can get into the cracks of rocks and stones (Cairn), it is named Cairn.
The Cairn Terrier, which originated from the Isle of Skye, has a common ancestor with other highland dog breeds such as the Scottish West Highland Terrier and the White Terrier. They are all very good at hunting otters, foxes, and mice. The original Cairn Terrier was called the Short-haired Skye Terrier, and it was not until 1909 that it was changed to its current name. In 1910, although the classification standard of the Short-haired Skye Terrier had been submitted, when they classified the Short-haired Skye Terrier again, it caused confusion. The judges refused to judge these dogs. So someone suggested that the Short-haired Skye Terrier be renamed "Skye's Cairn Terrier". Finally, in 1912, the British Kennel Dog Club established the "Cairn Terrier" breed, and the breed was also allowed to compete. It began to be introduced to the United States in 1913. At that time, many breeders would mate Cairn Terriers with West Highland White Terriers to improve the dark-colored breed with West Highland White Terrier bloodlines, which was also registered as Cairn Terriers. Therefore, in 1924, the British Kennel Club refused to register the offspring of the mating in order to distinguish the two breeds.
Cairn Terriers are very friendly to people, have a warm and tough personality, and are agile. Because of their excellent hunting performance, they have made many contributions to mankind in history. I believe that in the future, more Cairn Terriers will enter human families and become one of the indispensable members of human families.
