The Czech Terrier originated in the 1940s. Also known as the Bohemian Terrier, it is a small terrier that looks very similar to the Schnauzer.
In 1949, Dr. Halak, a famous Scottish Terrier and Sealyham Terrier breeding expert and Czech and Slovak geneticist, bred a dog breed that was slimmer, softer, and able to get into prey nests than Scottish Terrier and Sealyham Terrier, which could drive away rats and foxes. He mated and improved the Scottish Terrier and Sealyham Terrier, and bred the Czech Terrier in 1959. In 1963, the dog was recognized by the FCI. In 1993, it was registered by the Federal Dog Breeders Association.
The Czech Terrier is very suitable for living in the wild, and is best at hunting. In addition, its relatively small size allows it to better drive prey out of the cave. It is very agile and has relatively long endurance.
Czech Terrier is alert, strong, obedient, good-tempered, and child-friendly. It is a good watchdog and a good companion dog. It has soft-colored, gorgeous, silky hair and is very popular in the United States.
