The Otterhound originated in the United Kingdom and is an amphibious hound.
Capable of catching prey on land and in water, the Otterhound is a tall, matted-coated hound with a magnificent head that shows great power and majesty, a solid body and long strides that enable it to work for long periods of time. He has an extremely keen sense of smell, is curious about smells, and is able to persist in research.
Otterhounds are often stubborn, especially when they see water, because they love playing in the water and have the ability to swim for hours without stopping. Their sense of smell is very keen, and they can smell the scent left by otters in the morning.
Otterhounds may be descendants of bloodhounds. They may be the result of a cross between large rough-coated terriers, ancient foxhounds and French poodles. Different hounds in the UK are used for different hunting activities, such as foxhounds, harriers and bloodhounds for boar hunting. Otterhounds are used to chase otters to their lairs in cold water. Otters are no longer considered pests. Therefore, Otterhounds have lost their original function, but fortunately, they have an exciting new job as willing companions of humans. They can get along well with children and other animals.
