The Snowshoe cat originated in the United States and was produced by mating mixed-color American Shorthair and Siamese cats.
The origin of the Snowshoe cat can be traced back to the 1960s, when a Siamese cat raised by Dorothy Hinds Daugherty in Philadelphia, USA, gave birth to a litter of three kittens, each of which had white spots on its legs and feet. In order to incorporate such signs into the breed, their breeders mated bi-colored American Shorthair cats with Siamese cats, but this move was opposed by Siamese cat breeders, who were worried that the special white spot trait would become more obvious in the Siamese cat's bloodline. In the end, it was another breeder, Vicky Olenda, who bred this cat in 1974 and gained initial recognition in cat shows. Because its feet are white, like wearing snowshoes, it is named Snowshoe Cat.
Because the breeding of Snowshoe Cats was obtained by chance at that time, and people's record keeping was not complete, there are not many records for people to refer to. At the same time, there is another important reason in front of people, that is, the contradictions and disputes between new and old breeders about this new breed and which two new colors should be, resulting in the escalation of conflicts and disputes between new and old breeders, resulting in the fact that many of the history of Snowshoe Cats cannot be traced back today. The number of Snowshoe Cats reached its peak between 1960 and 1977.
Snowshoe cats are smart and responsive, full of personality, like family atmosphere, and are always willing to see family members. Most Snowshoe cats get along well with other cats, and their stable personalities make them a good choice for first-time cat owners.
