The fur of the South American Fur seal is dark gray.
Females and most immature individuals have a variety of colors, mostly gray on the neck and back, but some have white tips on the hair, making it silver-gray, and a pale yellow belly. It was named by Zimmermann in 1783.
Compared with other fur sea lions, the South American fur sea lion is more robust, with thinner ears and flippers; compared with the whiskers of other sea lions, the whiskers of the South American fur sea lion are shorter and milky white.
The South American fur sea lion is a professional diver, which can dive about 30 meters for 3 minutes, and the highest record is 170 meters for 7 minutes.
The South American fur sea lion is listed as Least Concern in the Red List of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
