About 1,000 years ago, some Turkish-speaking people came to settle in some parts of Asia, and they brought with them the proud shepherd dogs, the ancestors of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog.
Initially, the ancient Turks did not use sheepdogs to drive sheep, but only used them to protect the flocks from carnivores. These sheepdogs were called Anatolian Shepherd Dogs until 1970, when breeders found several different types of sheepdogs after investigation. The types of sheepdogs in central and western Turkey are very similar. In Turkey, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is still the protector of sheep and flocks from wolves and bears. Due to their strict social organization, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog should be well suited to the family environment. However, their lack of dependence and poor obedience make them less suitable as companion animals.
The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is tall, strong, powerful and impressive, with great endurance and agility. This breed was bred for a very practical purpose; the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is an unparalleled guard dog, and its specialty is protecting livestock. The general appearance is brave, but calm unless provoked. It has plenty of bone, a muscular body and a strong head. Territorial protection is allowed. Smooth movements and calm temperament are both advantages to be promoted.
