The head is elongated, with a flat top that tapers to the nose. The ears are small and thin, folded down and rose-shaped. The dark eyes are oval and set far apart. The bright eyes show extraordinary alertness. The chest is thick, the back muscles are strong, and the loins are strong. The tail is long, the tip is thin and slightly curved. The front legs are straight, not too far apart, and the hind legs are large and the thigh muscles are very developed. The toes are wide and the toes are thick.

The Whippet originated in northeast England. Its name comes from the word "whip", which means rapid movement. It is often used in short-distance races and can run at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour.

In the Victorian era, the dogfighting and dog racing craze was at its peak, and miners in northeast England were also addicted to it, so they mated terriers and small greyhounds and improved their offspring to participate in biting competitions or hunt hares. Because this competition was very cruel, it was later banned in the UK and changed to cloth biting competitions. This legal competition uses a waving handkerchief as a signal, and the Whippet runs towards the owner at full speed according to this signal. In northern England, such competitions are still very popular. It has also become an entertainment activity for celebrating festivals. Whippets' performance in cloth-biting competitions was very average, so they gradually lost the opportunity to appear. Instead, they began to appear in various dog shows due to their graceful posture, and since then they have embarked on a happy dog life that relies on their looks to make a living.

In the past, most people who bred Whippets were ordinary people in Britain at that time, so Whippets were also called "poor people's running horses." On the other hand, due to their extremely fast running speed, they were also called "fast dogs". In the early middle and lower-level dog competitions in the mining areas of England, they were often the best in the short-distance races.

In China, at the 2019 Shanghai World Dog Show hosted by the FCI World Dog Association on April 30, 2019, Jiang Wei from China led his Whippet dogs to participate in the competition and eventually won the world championship of the Whippet baby group. This is the first time that a Chinese dog has won the championship of this breed in a world dog show.

The dog looks weak, but this small dog has amazing strength and is very fast. In addition, because it has the bloodline of the Italian Greyhound, it has strong disease resistance and a long lifespan. It only needs sufficient exercise every day, which is the best choice for family dog breeding.
