Dugong There is a kind of sea beast called dugong living along the coasts of Guangdong, Guangxi, Taiwan and other provinces in my country. Its name is a direct transliteration of Malay, and some people also call it "Southern Sea Cow". In addition to China, dugongs are also distributed in some countries around the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Dugong also has a common name, "Mermaid". People often say that pigs are ugly animals. However, dugongs are actually uglier than pigs. The upper lip forms a flat disk, just like a pig's round and flat nose, only larger than a pig's disk. The entire head is occupied by this disk, the nostrils are pushed to the top of the head, the eyes are small, there are no ear shells, and the disk is densely covered with thick tentacles. This appearance is really not "beautiful" at all. However, those literati who had never seen them had beautiful imaginations based on legends, so the originally ugly animals became like "beauties". Although dugongs are ugly, they are very docile and amiable. Dugongs feed on succulent aquatic plants such as seaweed and aquatic plants, as well as fibrous rushes and grasses. They eat basically any aquatic plant. Dugongs are about 3 meters long and weigh about 400 kilograms. They move slowly and never stray far from the coast. Its swimming speed is not fast, usually about 2 nautical miles per hour, and even when it is escaping, it is only 5 nautical miles. Dugong has been listed as a national first-level protected animal.
