Characteristics and living habits of melon-headed whales

Melon-headed whale alias: multi-toothed melon-headed whale. Morphological characteristics: The head is oval, without a rostrum, with a pointed front end, and the upper jaw does not protrude from the lower jaw. The dorsal fin is located in the middle of the body, wider than that of the false killer whale, up to 30 cm high, with the front edge tilted backward and the end blunt. The flippers are 1/6 of the body length and have pointed ends. The body is dark gray to dark brown, with white upper and lower lips. There is a dark area around the eyes. There is a thick colored band extending from the head to the dorsal fin along the midline of the body's back, and expands into an arc-shaped dark area under the dorsal fin. There are white spots on the throat, from the umbilicus to the anus.

The area near the door is off-white. There are 20-25 teeth on each side of the upper and lower jaws. The body length can reach 2.75 meters, and the maximum weight is about 275 kilograms. Newborn whale calves are about 1 meter or less in length.


Tropical species, often in groups of dozens to hundreds, swim very fast. Sometimes there are groups of people having fun. It is distributed in the South my country Sea and the waters of Taiwan Province.
