Northeast lampreys live in fresh water all their lives, in mountain rivers with microcurrents and sandy bottoms; they burrow into sand or gravel during the day and come out to forage at night; they burrow into silt to hibernate in winter. Juveniles metamorphose into adults after 3-4 years, hiding in gravel during the day and coming out to forage at night.

In China, it is distributed in the Liaohe River Basin, Yalu River, and the mountainous rivers in the eastern part of Heilongjiang Province. Abroad, it is distributed in northern North Korea and the Russian Far East.
The body is eel-shaped, with a cylindrical front part and a flattened back part. The tail is short and the anus is located at the back of the body. The total length is about 18-20 times the body height and 5.3-6 times the head length. The head is long and cylindrical, and the head length is 3.3-3.4 times the snout length. The eyes are covered by translucent skin. There is one nostril, located in the center of the back of the eye, with raised edges, no pigment distribution, and a ring shape. There is an oblong light-colored spot behind it, which is the parietal eye area and has photosensitivity. Below the mouth, it is a funnel-shaped sucker with a fringe surrounded by spike-like protrusions. Each protrusion is palm-shaped and branched at the end. No upper and lower jaws. The teeth in the oral funnel are horny and light yellow; the upper labial plate has one tooth at each end, with 3 pairs of inner teeth, 2 tips at the tooth end, and lateral teeth with the tips curving inward; the teeth
