There was considerable controversy over the classification of Percocypris species, and this species was once considered a synonym of Percocypris pingi retrodorslis. In 2013, researchers Yang Junxing, Wang Mo, and Chen Xiaoyong from the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, combined the results of molecular systematics and morphological analysis to revise the classification system of the genus Carp, considering Zhang's Carp and Houbei Carp as valid independent species.
