Victoria Crowned Pigeon (scientific name: Goura victoria) is also known as Victoria Crowned-pigeon in English. Male and female are the same color. It has the most gorgeous and beautiful crest among birds. It is also the most colorful and beautiful pigeon. It is the largest member of the domestic pigeon family.
Victoria Crowned Pigeons often live in forests or swamps near water, gather in small groups to forage, are nocturnal, and mainly eat seeds, fruits, and insects of various plants.
Victoria crowned pigeons mate and reproduce every spring, during which the male and female birds will spread their fan-shaped crests to flirt with each other, and a pair of partners will stay together for life. The nest is built on a tree. The female bird lays only one egg each time. The incubation period is 28-30 days. The parent bird secretes pigeon milk to feed the chicks. The chicks will live with their parents until the second year before starting to live independently. They are sexually mature at around 2 years old and have a maximum lifespan of 25 years.
In October 2009, several Victoria crowned pigeons were hatched in the London Zoo. This is the first time that this rare pigeon has been bred in London.
