Quails are terrestrial birds that move and walk mainly on the ground. In late summer or fall and winter, adult and subadult birds move in family units, gathering into groups of more than 20 birds. Quails can also fly short distances, often quickly for a short period of time before slowly returning to the ground in the face of danger and disturbance.

The quail's diet consists mainly of plants and seeds. Chicks are significantly more insectivorous than adults and gradually consume more plant matter as they mature.

Quails are monogamous. During the breeding season, female birds usually choose to dig a shallow hole in an area where vegetation is hidden, at the bottom of a tree or brush, usually near a water source, and lay 9 to 10 eggs. Incubation lasts 21-25 days and is usually performed by the female, rarely by the male. Young birds are precocious and can leave the nest with their parents within a few hours of hatching, searching for food as they go.
