Mountain Quail (Oreortyx pictus) has five subspecies.
The quail's diet consists mainly of plants and seeds. Chicks are significantly more insectivorous than adults and gradually consume more plant matter as they mature.
Quails are monogamous. During the breeding season, female birds usually choose to dig a shallow hole in an area where vegetation is hidden, at the bottom of a tree or brush, usually near a water source, and lay 9 to 10 eggs. Incubation lasts 21-25 days and is usually performed by the female, rarely by the male. Young birds are precocious and can leave the nest with their parents within a few hours of hatching, searching for food as they go.
Listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 2016 Red List of Threatened Species ver 3.1 - Not Threatened (LC).
