The quail is 24-27 cm long and weighs 290 grams. Easily distinguished from other quails, they are known for their short, thick beaks. The male has black plumage, so it's easy to identify. In contrast, the upper body of the female is chestnut brown, which usually corresponds to the cream-colored throat, abdomen, and arms of the lower body. Both sexes have gray legs and feet.

Black quails are omnivorous, and plants include: grains, seeds, roots, tubers, nuts, fruits, berries and leaves. Animals include: arthropods (orthoptera, trichoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera), mollusks, worms.
The breeding season for black quail is August-September in Peninsular Malaysia, with smaller chicks observed in mid-July and late October in Borneo, and slightly older chicks seen in mid-December in Sumatra. The nest is built on the ground, simple and rough, covered with dead leaves, and incubation lasts 18-19 days.
