Scleroptila shelleyi Life habits and morphological characteristics

The Partridge is 33-35 cm long and weighs 392-600 grams. There are several vertical black and yellow stripes from the top of the head to the neck, with fine white stripes. In flight, small reddish-brown patches appear on the wings. The lower part of the body is characterized by square markings of mixed black and white, especially on the stomach. The beak is black and the legs are yellow.

The Partridge is commonly found in various grasslands and woodlands in Africa. Open wooded mountain and savannah. Land birds, when in danger, fly quickly, but usually run away in panic. Scour the ground for insects and plant seeds, feeding on weeds, roots, seeds, young leaves and crops, as well as insects and invertebrates.

The Partridge is monogamous and the breeding season varies from region to region, generally during the dry season following the rainy season. The nest is built on the ground hidden in dense grass. Each clutch lays 3-8 eggs.
