Scientists have discovered partial bones and tusks of a Columbian mammoth in Idaho, USA. They believe that a complete mammoth skeleton may be buried here, which would be a very rare discovery.

Experts estimate that this mammoth lived between 70,000 and 120,000 years ago and was about 16 years old when it died. It lived in a savannah full of large herbivores and predators. The skeleton was discovered by amateur "fossil hunters" earlier this month and then excavated by teachers and students at Idaho State University.

On the 18th of this month, water rose in a nearby reservoir, forcing their work to be suspended, but they erected a fence to ensure that the skeletons would remain in place even if they were flooded. They plan to return to the site and continue digging after water levels drop again next summer.

The Colombian mammoth is the largest of the five woolly mammoth species in North America.
