The smallest of the pig-tailed rats.
Details
The pig-tailed rat is a new species published by Cheng Bin et al. of Kunming Institute of Zoology in 2017. It was found in the secondary forest of Abies longibracteata at an altitude of 2000-3000m, with bamboo and rhododendron shrubs under the forest.
Location
In China, it is only distributed in Luquan and Pingbian, Yunnan.
Form
The individual is small, with a body length of 64-74mm and a tail length of 97-106mm. It is the smallest among the pig-tailed rats. The back is gray-black, the belly is creamy white, the hair base is gray, and there is a clear boundary between the dorsal and ventral hair colors; the tail is longer like the Chinese pig-tailed rat, with sparse long hairs in the back half. The skull is protruding. The first lower molar does not have a posterior tooth socket, which is different from all other pig-tailed rats.
