Callosciurus caniceps Life habits and morphological characteristics

Back is orange (ochre) yellow. The ventral surface is off-white, and some have a 4-6mm wide black stripe in the middle of the abdomen. The throat, chin and inner thighs are generally similar in color to the abdomen. The tail is long, gray, interspersed with black hair, with upright hair tips and black hair loops at the tail. The back of the foot, snout and ear tips are lighter in color, similar to the color of the abdomen. The orange on the back gradually turns to light gray as it transitions to the abdomen, top of the head and base of the tail.

In China, it is distributed in Taiwan, Yunnan and other places. Abroad, it is distributed in Southeast Asian countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia.

The golden-backed squirrel (scientific name: Callosciurus caniceps) is an animal of the genus Callosciurus, native to western Malaysia, Thailand and southern Myanmar. It has been artificially introduced to the Ryukyu Islands. In China, it is distributed in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and other places. The type locality of this species is in Myanmar.


This species was previously regarded as a subspecies of the red-bellied squirrel for a long time. There is little ecological information about this species.
