Observing your cat’s teeth, behavior, and other characteristics can help us determine their age.
1. Teeth: A kitten’s deciduous teeth will begin to grow within two to three weeks after birth. The deciduous teeth will be replaced at about four months and the permanent teeth of adult cats will grow. Therefore, observing the state of a cat’s teeth can help us roughly determine their age. For example, if a cat has baby teeth, it's probably a kitten between two and three weeks to four months old.
2. Behavior: Younger cats are usually more active and curious, and often play or climb. Adult cats, on the other hand, are relatively mature or lazy, with relatively less movement and range of activities.
3. Hair: The hair of kittens will be softer and finer, while the hair of adult cats will be relatively rough.
4. Body size: Kittens are relatively small and delicate, while adult cats are relatively larger.
5. Eyes: Cats’ eyes are closed when they are born. They will gradually open around 7-10 days, and will appear light blue or gray-green 1-2 weeks after opening. By about 3 months, the eye color changes to their lifelong color.
In short, by observing the characteristics of cats’ teeth, behavior, hair, body size, and eyes, we can roughly judge their age group and help us better understand and take care of their health needs. If you need a more accurate age determination, please consult a professional veterinarian.
