How many months does it take for a cat to start estrus?

Sexual maturity in cats usually begins between 5-12 months. However, the time to sexual maturity will vary between breeds, genders, and individual cats. Generally speaking, male cats reach sexual maturity earlier than female cats.

Female cats can usually start going into heat at 5-9 months (sometimes even 3-4 months), but this does not mean that they should be allowed to give birth at this time. It is best to wait until the female cat is mature, well-nourished and in good health before breeding. Otherwise, getting female cats pregnant too early may affect their health and fertility.

Male cats usually take longer to reach sexual maturity, around 6-12 months. Male cats will frequently mark the area around themselves to indicate their territory and attract the attention of female cats. If you do not plan to breed your male cat, it is best to consider castration surgery. This will not only prevent cats from fighting due to love disputes, but is also good for their health.

It should be noted that, except during the breeding period, keeping cats sterilized can reduce their bad behaviors, such as barking, bad temper, etc. If you have any questions about your cat's sexual maturation and reproduction, seek advice from your veterinarian or pet health professional.
