Why should you never keep a female civet cat?

Kittens bred from female civet cats (civet color) sometimes develop liver abnormalities called bichromatic cat disease. This is caused by the mother of the civet cat carrying a recessive genetic defect called the "Kell" gene. When a female calico cat is mated with other cats of certain genotypes, she may produce kittens that carry bichromatic cat disease.

Bichromatic cat disease is a serious disease that affects a cat's liver function, leading to liver failure and death. There is currently no cure for the disease, and diagnosis is difficult. Therefore, to avoid producing kittens with bichromatic cat disease, many veterinarians and breeders recommend against using female tabby cats for breeding.

However, for people who already have female tabby cats as pets, that doesn’t mean they can’t be properly nurtured and loved. As long as you make sure not to breed, take appropriate health care, and provide a good living environment, female tabby cats can make lovely, happy pets.

It is important that if you plan to adopt a Siamese cat or any other cat, it is best to consult a veterinarian or professional breeder to learn about related genetic diseases and precautions, and to properly manage your cat's health and reproductive issues.
