Are dogs’ ancestors wolves?

Yes, dogs can trace their ancestry back to wolves. Modern dogs are the result of thousands of years of domestication and artificial selection between humans and wolves. Based on genetic and archaeological research, scientists believe that the earliest ancestor of modern dogs was the gray wolf (Canis lupus).
