Spinibarbus hollandi (Spinibarbus hollandi) belongs to the order Cypriniformes, family Cyprinidae, subfamily Spinibarbus, and genus Spinibarbus hollandi. Commonly known as: green stick, kengjian, light-eyed fish, Huangjuan, rough-scaled fish.


The body is long, slightly cylindrical, and the tail peduncle is flat on the sides. The snout is blunt, the mouth is slightly lower, and it is horseshoe-shaped. There are 2 pairs of barbels, the snout barbels are shorter, and the ends of the jaw barbels exceed the back edge of the eyes. There is a barb lying forward in front of the starting point of the dorsal fin, which is buried in the skin; the dorsal fin has no hard spines. The scales are large, with dark spots on the base of the lateral scales. The back of the body is dark yellow, the abdomen is gray-white, the edge of the dorsal fin is black, and the other fins are orange-red.

It generally inhabits the middle and lower layers of rivers with rocky bottoms and fast currents. It especially likes to live in waters with clear water. It is an omnivorous fish that feeds mainly on aquatic plants and also eats aquatic insects and their larvae. They also feed on some terrestrial insects and shrimps that fall into the water. From April to May, sticky eggs are laid in places with slow water flow and many aquatic plants.


Distributed in various water systems such as the Yangtze River, Qiantang River, Minjiang River, Jiulong River, Pearl River, Yuanjiang River, Taiwan Island and Hainan Island.


It is widely distributed, has a variety of food habits, and is suitable for domestication. It grows quickly and is large in size. The first-year-old fish weighs 150 grams, and the second-year-old fish can weigh up to 500 grams. The third-year-old fish can already grow to about 400 mm, and the largest individual can reach 20 kilograms. The annual output in South China and Southwest China is extremely considerable, and it is an important economic fish in the production areas. The barbed barbel has a thick body and fat meat, and a fresh and tender taste. It is very popular among the local people. Its meat, eaten fresh, has the effect of aphrodisiac and tonic, and is mainly used to treat aches and pains in the waist and knees.
