Coilia mystus belongs to the order Coilia, family Coiliaceae, and genus Coilia. Commonly known as: yellow anchovy, anchovy, sub-anchovy, grilled sub-fish. English name: Tapertail anchovy.

The body shape is similar to that of the bream, but the number of anal fin rays is smaller, only 73-86; there are also fewer longitudinal scales on the side of the body. The body is light yellow. The tip of its snout and each fin ray are yellow, and the edges of the fins are black. The phoenix is an estuarine migratory fish that usually inhabits shallow seas. Every spring, a large number of fish migrate from the sea to the brackish water areas of river mouths to lay eggs, but they never go upstream into pure fresh water areas. The newly hatched larvae are fattened in the deep water of river mouths, and then return to the sea to reach sexual maturity the following year. The female fish is larger than the male fish. The female fish is 12-16 cm long and weighs 10-20 grams, while the male fish is only 13 cm long and weighs about 12 grams. Generally, broiler fish begin to arrive from the sea to river mouths in late April (around Grain Rain), but the number is not large; from early May (Beginning of Summer) to early July (Xiaozu), large numbers of fish arrive, and this is the time for Fengquan fishing. Peak season: In late July (after the big fish season), the broodstock that have laid eggs gradually return to the sea to live. The phoenix rarely feeds during its migration to river mouths to lay eggs. Its food is shrimp, copepods and juvenile fish. Phoenix anchovy is the main economic fish in the estuaries of the Yangtze River, Pearl River, Minjiang River and other rivers. The fish flood season production is very high. The annual production of the Yangtze River Estuary alone reaches 4-4.5 million kilograms. There are often more male fish in the catch than female fish.
