River pufferfish is commonly known as: boat mackerel, bubble fish, puffer fish, spicy head fish, chicken clinging fish, belly fish, barbel, etc. The puffer fish has an oval body, a small mouth, plate-shaped incisors, and small spiny scales. Its fish scales are very developed. When it encounters foreign enemies or is frightened, it will quickly inflate its swim bladder and rapidly expand its abdomen. The entire body will become spherical and float to the water. At the same time, the small spines on the skin will stand up to defend itself.
Pufferfish are raised as ornamental fish due to their unique body shape and lifestyle. Its feeding habits are diverse and its food range is wide. Common foods include shrimps, crabs, fish fry, insect larvae, cladocerans, copepods, branches and leaves of higher plants and filamentous algae. It has strong fecundity and the reproductive season is from April to June.
