Eulemur macaco Life habits and morphological characteristics

The total length of the black lemur is 90 cm-110 cm, the head and body length is 39-45 cm, the tail length is 51-65 cm, and the weight is 2-2.5 kg. The male hair is black, some of which are slightly dark brown; there are black tufted ears, orange-yellow and bean-like round eyes, and the female back and head are reddish brown, the face is light brown, the limbs are pale, the tail is dark chestnut, the ears are wide, and there are white tufts, which extend to the cheeks as they age.

Eulemur macaco Distribution range and habitat

It is found in the northwestern part of Madagascar along the Mahavavy River, eastwards to the vicinity of Ambilobe, Nosy Be Island, and Diego-Suarez Province.

Black Lemur (scientific name: Eulemur macaco) is mainly found in the humid tropical rainforests of Madagascar, and some prefer to live in dry areas. They live in groups of 7-10, led by older females. They have a sense of territory and are aggressive. They mainly feed on fruits, pollen, and nectar. When food is scarce, they also eat leaves and insects. They help pollinate plants to a certain extent.

The black lemur is polygamous. Females reproduce in June and July each year, giving birth to 1-2 cubs per litter, with a gestation period of 120-129 days. The cubs are weaned after 5-6 months, sexually mature at 2 years old, and have a lifespan of 15-30 years.


Listed in the 2012 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Ver3.1 - Vulnerable (VU).

Listed in the CITES Appendix I of the Washington Convention as a protected animal.
