Cercocebus galeritus Life habits and morphological characteristics

The Crested Mangabey is a medium-sized long-tailed monkey, with a head-body length of 49-63 cm for males and 44-53 cm for females; a tail length of 62-76 cm for males and 40-60 cm for females; and a weight of 9.6-10.2 kg for males and 5.3-5.5 kg for females. The cheek pouches are well developed. The long, tapering tail is always held high behind the back, almost as long as its body.
It has yellow-brown fur, with a centrally separated crown of hair on the top of its head, which is very long. The dark fur is draped down from its sides. Like all Mangabey monkeys, this species has white eyelids that contrast with the dark color of the face, which is characteristic to aid visual communication through facial expressions. This species has long molars and very large incisors, which enable them to crack the shells of hard seeds and nuts in its diet.

The Crested White-browed Monkey is a diurnal monkey species that lives in family groups of about 10 to 36, mostly female groups. It is active during the day and is most active in the early morning and dusk. On the surface, they usually move slowly and leisurely. But in fact, they are agile, with fast speed and reaction. The main food is: fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, tender branches, and occasionally small animals. They have wide cheek pouches that can be used to store food.

The gestation period of the crested white-browed monkey is about 170 to 180 days, with one baby born in each litter. The life expectancy is between 19 and 21 years, but few people know the life history of this species.

The crested white-browed monkey is produced in the rainforest of the Tana River Basin in Africa. Due to the rapid increase in the population in the Tana River Basin, the rapid expansion of cultivated land, and the significant reduction in forest area, the crested white-browed monkey is in a very bad situation. In addition, the Tana River Dam is about to be built, and the river will no longer flood, and the ecological environment of the entire basin will be completely changed. Its fate is unimaginable.

Listed in the 2008 Red List of Threatened Species of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) ver 3.1 - Endangered (EN).
