The whole body is black, with white areas on the limbs, head and back, a mane on the neck, and a muzzle close to that of a dog. Male and female monkeys have the same appearance. The tail is as long as the body. The black muzzle is relatively prominent, the eyes are orange-red, the head is black, the ears have white tufts, and the furry tail is usually black. The legs are much longer than the arms. Walk on all fours.
Several subspecies can be distinguished by color: the black and white subspecies have black faces and white ears, with strong contrast, with black patches to the upper part of the back, and a white stripe running down the back; another subspecies has no such stripe; another subspecies has no such stripe; The back hair of the species is completely black or has band-like white hair patterns.

Varecia variegata Distribution range and habitat

The black-and-white ruffed lemur is endemic to Madagascar, with a distribution from the Masorah Peninsula in the north to Farafangana in the south. They live in the canopy of monsoon forests in eastern Madagascar, confined to scattered habitats on the island and covered by less protected areas than their red-ruffed cousins.

Varecia variegata Detailed Introduction

The black-and-white ruffed lemur is actually very special. They are the representatives of peace and never quarrel over territory. Not only that, their way of raising offspring is also unique. The probability of twins among primates is very small, but it is very common among ruffed lemurs. Other monkeys carry their cubs on their backs or hold them in their chests, but they hold their cubs in their mouths and put them in the small nests they have prepared.

Some black-and-white collared lemurs are active by nature and practice hanging upside down from time to time, but more often they like to sit upright and open their arms to bask in the sun. When they are tired of playing, they will stare at you blankly, as if saying: Hug me~

The call of the black-and-white collared lemur is second only to the howler monkey in the primate order.

The black-and-white collared lemur is the first wild animal on the world's endangered animal list and has been considered one of the largest endangered populations. Deforestation is the main reason, and the space they rely on for survival has been reduced by 90%. .

Listed in the 2012 Red List of Endangered Species of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) ver 3.1 - Critically Endangered (CR).

Listed as an animal protected under Appendix I of the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
