The Sri Lankan Mesoplodon hotaula was first described in 1963 and was considered a synonym of the Ginkgotoothed Mesoplodon ginkgodens in 1965, but until recently, mitochondrial and nuclear studies have shown that the genes of the Mesoplodon hotaula are different from those of the Ginkgotoothed Mesoplodon ginkgodens.

Hotaula's beaked whale (Mesoplodon hotaula) is found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Form
The male body length of Mesoplodon hotaula is 386-432 cm. According to the skull morphology, Mesoplodon hotaula has a pair of large, laterally flattened asymmetrical tusks behind the mandibular symphysis. The teeth are tall and vertical, with convex rear edges and nearly flat front edges. The cross section of the premaxilla of Mesoplodon hotaula exceeds 60 mm and has a fairly flat cross section. Its mandibular symphysis is short and the end of the mandible is short and thick.
