List of Chinese mammals_How many species of mammals are there in my country?

2022-10-25 16:24:32 125

China has a vast territory, complex terrain and diverse climate. It is one of the countries with the richest animal resources in the world. In order to clarify the classification status of mammals in China and the number of species, Academician Wei Fuwen, chairman of the Veterinary Branch of the Chinese Zoological Society, organized domestic researchers who have long been engaged in the classification of various mammal groups. After five years of discussions and soliciting opinions, they formed the The latest "List of Chinese Animals (2021 Edition)" (hereinafter referred to as the "List") was recently published in the Journal of Animals. The following article will briefly introduce the basic situation of the "Directory" for the readers' convenience.

Number of mammals in China

The "List" shows that at this stage (as of June 2021), there are 686 species of mammals in 12 orders, 59 families, 254 genera, accounting for the total number of extant species of mammals in the world (6,450 species, Burgin et al. 2020) 10.64%.

Directory classification system

< /span>

With the gradual accumulation of ancient mammal fossils and the rapid development of molecular systematics, the phylogenetic relationships among various mammal groups have been re-evaluated, and major changes have occurred at the order, family and species levels.

This "List" is cataloged according to the phylogenetic tree constructed from the latest phylogenetic relationships of various groups of mammals. The order and family levels are arranged according to phylogenetic relationships, starting from the root of the phylogenetic tree; the genus and species levels are arranged according to Latin names.

Principles for determining species validity

01

Species classification determination shouldin compliance with international zoological nomenclature regulations , with credential support, including specimens, entities, photos and documents, etc.

02

Determined by combining morphological and molecular evidence, if there is only molecular evidence, it will not be considered temporarily.

03

Be careful when promoting a subspecies to a species, if improvement is really needed, collective discussion and sufficient evidence are required.

04

Species that have specimens but are determined not to be distributed in China (similar to mythical birds) are not included, such as the Malayan giant flying fox; species that have been confirmed to be distributed in history but have now been declared extinct, such as rhinos, etc.; controversial species species, alien species, etc. are not included for the time being.

05

Species that have been reintroduced and have formed wild populations in the wild are included in the list, such as elk.

06

The selection of the Chinese name of the species follows the author's original intention when publishing, such as Burmese golden monkey.

07

The taxonomic status of the giant panda was once controversial. The "List" adopts the currently internationally recognized classification method that lists it as the only species of Carnivora, Ursidae, Giant Panda subfamily and Giant Panda genus.

This "List" and the corresponding soon-to-be-published "Classification and Distribution of Animals in China" are a systematic compilation of the survey and research results on the classification and distribution of mammal species in my country. They are the crystallization of the collective wisdom of the zoological workers of all generations in my country and can provide It provides a reference for zoological workers and wildlife conservation managers to carry out classification and identification of mammal species, and provides the latest basic information for the conservation of mammal diversity in China.
