It is a species endemic to China. It is only found in the Xin'an Forest Farm of Diaoluo Mountain, Hainan Island, where the type specimen was produced. The type specimen was collected at an altitude of 950m.
The ear holes are extremely small and needle-shaped. There are 20 rows of dorsal scales. The dorsal scales and the scales under the tail are smooth, and there are no dark horizontal stripes on the back of the body. The Hainan brittle snake lizard has degenerated its limbs and is slender like a snake. The male head and body length is 285mm, and the regenerated tail is 375mm long, with the tail length accounting for more than 1/2 of the total length. The ear holes are extremely small and needle-shaped, much smaller than the nostrils; there are movable eyelids; there are 2 small scales between the nose scales and the single frontal scale (frontal nose scale). There is a shallow longitudinal groove on each side of the body. There are about 20 rows of dorsal scales above the left and right longitudinal grooves, and about 10 longitudinal rows of ventral scales below. The dorsal and ventral scales are smooth, and only the 6 rows of dorsal scales in the center of the posterior 1/3 of the body
