The fastest animal on earth is the cheetah. The cheetah, also known as the Indian leopard, is an animal in the genus Cheetah and the only species in the genus Cheetah. Cheetahs have black spots all over their bodies. So a cheetah can generally only sprint a few hundred meters before it slows down. Otherwise, its body will overheat and collapse will occur. So this kind of running is very debilitating. Sometimes the cheetah catches the prey because it ran too fast just now, so it can't eat at that time. It has to take a rest or catch its breath before it can start eating.
Adult life for wild cheetahs is difficult. The average age span of a wild cheetah (male and female combined) is 10-12 years. The average lifespan of adult males in the wild is low (8 years), partly due to territorial conflicts with competing males. Adult mortality is one of the most important limiting factors to the growth and survival of wild cheetah populations. Cheetahs in captivity can live 17-20 years.
