Details
The scientific name of Indian Red Muntjac is Muntiacus vaginalis. Its foreign names include Barking Deer, Indian Muntjac, Indian Red Muntjac, and Northern Red Muntjac. Similar to the Yellow Muntjac, it will bark when in danger, so it is also called the Barking Deer. Except for the mating season, it generally lives alone, but a few live in groups, and even feed on grass with other large animals. It usually appears day and night, and is most active at dusk and in foggy times.
Listed in the 2008 Red List of Endangered Species of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) ver 3.1 - Low Concern (LC).
