The animal that produces musk is called the musk deer, also called the Malayan musk deer. They are small ungulates that are distributed in Southeast Asia, including southern China, India, Malaysia, Myanmar and other countries and regions. Musk deer are relatively small, usually weighing only about 10-20 kilograms as an adult, but they have special hydrophobic hair and skin glands that can produce musk with a rich fragrance.
Due to the preciousness and uniqueness of musk, people have long carried out overhunting and indiscriminate hunting of musk deer, resulting in a sharp decrease in its number and it is listed as an endangered species. At present, various countries have taken a series of measures for protection and management, including prohibiting hunting and trade, to protect the survival and reproduction of musk deer.
