The lugworm is an insect also known as a scarab or beetle. They belong to the family Cerambycidae and are widely distributed and abundant. They can be found in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa.

The body of an adult Nereis worm is usually oval, about 2-3 cm in length, and its back has bright metallic colors, such as green, purple or copper. The larvae live in the soil, feed on organic matter, and undergo multiple molts to grow. The larvae later pupate into a sac-like cocoon, and the adults emerge from the cocoon a few weeks later.

Nereis are of great ecological significance in nature because they can convert organic matter in the soil into fertilizer and promote soil fertility. At the same time, the larvae of lugworms are also a food source for many birds and mammals.
