Is it serious for cats to breathe through their mouth?

If your cat is already severely mouth breathing, this could be a sign of some medical issue or strain on the respiratory system. Normally, cats should breathe through their nose, not through their open mouth.

The following conditions may cause a cat to breathe through its mouth:

1. Nasal congestion or upper airway obstruction: If a cat's nose is blocked, such as due to a cold, allergies, sinusitis, etc., the cat may try to get enough oxygen by breathing through the mouth.

2. Difficulty breathing: Certain diseases or conditions such as asthma, lung infection, heart disease, tumors, etc. may cause cats to have difficulty breathing. In this situation, the cat may force itself to open its mouth wider to breathe to increase air flow.

3. Heat stress: When cats are exposed to high temperatures, or their body temperature becomes too high, they may open their mouths to breathe to lower their body temperature.

4. Anxiety or fear: In some cases, cats may feel anxious or fearful, causing them to breathe faster and open their mouths.

If you observe that your cat is consistently mouth-breathing with significant difficulty, this may indicate a serious health problem and should seek medical attention as soon as possible. It's important to take your cat to the veterinarian for a complete physical examination and evaluation to determine the cause of breathing problems and provide appropriate treatment. While waiting for medical attention, make sure your cat is given a quiet, comfortable environment and avoid being overly agitated or exposed to heat.
