How long does it take for a duckling to recognize you as its owner?

The ducklings will form an "influence period" early after hatching. This period is a critical period for the ducklings to form cognitive and emotional connections with the surrounding environment and objects. During this period, if humans become part of the duckling's living environment and provide positive experiences such as food, care, and warmth, the duckling may form a close connection with humans and regard humans as its "acknowledged owners." But this does not mean that the little duck will definitely form a close relationship with you as its owner. Each duck has its own personality and preferences, and some may be more relatable to people, while others may retain more of their wild nature.

The influence period usually occurs within the first 12 to 24 hours after hatching, so it's best to establish contact with your duckling during this time if you want it to recognize you as its owner. Providing a suitable breeding environment, positive interaction and care, as well as patience and gentleness are the keys to building a close relationship with your ducklings.

After early imprinting on an object, the duck maintains close contact with the object and provides the required warmth and protection. During this critical period, ducks develop an emotional attachment, but that doesn't mean they truly get to know humans as their owners.

However, ducks may develop a level of affinity toward humans if people establish close interaction and contact with them in the early years after hatching. They can gradually realize that humans are beings derived from warmth, food and care, and establish a certain degree of intimacy with humans.

It's important to note that ducks and other birds have an instinctive tendency to more readily form perceptions of the mother bird with whom they were incubated. So while ducks can feel close to humans, they are more likely to form relationships with their avian companions.

All in all, building a bond with a duckling takes time, patience, and some luck. Providing the right environment, good care, and warm interactions can increase the bond between you and your duckling, but ultimately the development of the relationship also depends on the characteristics and experiences of the individual duck.
