Is moth powder poisonous?

Most moth powders are not toxic, but in some cases they may cause allergic reactions in some people. This powder and scales usually fall off the moths when they are touched or approached. Some people are allergic to these scales and may experience skin allergies, respiratory discomfort and other reactions after contact. However, this is not a reaction that occurs in all species of moths, and is more a case of individual individuals.

It is important to note that some moth larvae and adults accumulate toxins that may be harmful to predators. For example, the larvae of species in the family Borrididae (e.g., silkworm moths) can absorb toxins from the leaves of their food source, the mulberry tree, making these larvae and adults somewhat toxic.

Nonetheless, contact with moths is generally safe for the general population, as long as appropriate precautions are taken, such as avoiding direct contact and avoiding unnecessary proximity or handling of moths.
