The yellow-necked woodpecker is distributed in Gongshan, Babo, Lushui, Pangma, Yaojiaping, Tengchong, Yingjiang, Lijiang, Longchuan, Nujiang, Lancang and Xinping in Yunnan, Qamdo in Tibet, and western and southwestern Sichuan. Outside China, it is found in Nepal, Sikkim, Assam, India, northern Myanmar, and northern Vietnam.
Yellow-necked woodpecker mainly lives in the mountain coniferous forest and coniferous broad-leaved mixed forest, and the altitude is more than 1500 meters to about 3000 meters.
