The black-rumped woodpecker is distributed in the Indian subcontinent and southwest China, including India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the southeastern region of Tibet, China.
It is about 47 centimeters long. It has two toes facing forward, one facing side and one facing backward. There are sharp claws on the tips of the toes.
