The small woodpecker is found in South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Malvinas Islands (also known as the Falkland Islands).

On June 15, 2014, Wang Zhengpeng photographed for the first time a new species of subgenus Micropecker in the Forty-eight village of Cili County, Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, China.
Listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) ver 3.1:2009 Bird Red List.
