The red-green woodpecker is distributed in Indochina Peninsula and southeast coastal areas of China, including Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and southeast coastal areas of China, Hong Kong area of China, Hainan Island, and Pacific islands. It includes China's Taiwan Province, the Dongsha Islands, the Xisha Islands, the Zhongsha Islands, and the Spratly Islands, as well as the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia's Sumatra, Java, and Papua New Guinea.
