The Chinese knot fish (Tor(Tor)tor sinensis) belongs to the order Cypriniformes, the family Cyprinidae, the subfamily Torinoideae, the genus Tor (Tor) tor sinensis, and the subgenus Tor (Tor) tor sinensis. Commonly known as: Carp (Dai ethnic group).

The side of the body is flat, the snout is pointed and protruding forward. The mouth is in the lower position, the lip is thick and fleshy, completely covering the edge of the jaw; the lower lip is divided into 3 lobes, the middle lobe is developed and tongue-shaped, and the rear edge of the middle lobe is almost flush with the corner of the mouth in adult fish. There are 2 pairs of barbels, the muzzle barbels are short, and the jaw barbels extend back to the back edge of the eyes. The scales are large, with 23-26 lateral line scales, and the lateral line is slightly downward curved. The dorsal fin has thick and smooth spines, and the caudal fin is forked.

The Chinese knotfish is a middle- and lower-level fish that usually lives in the slow flow of the main rivers. Juveniles eat zooplankton, and adults eat omnivores, mainly aquatic invertebrates. The spawning period is from July to September, and they breed in rapids with pebbly bottoms.

The Chinese knotfish is distributed in the Lancang River in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province.

There is another knot fish living in the Lancang River water system - T. (Tor) douronensis. The middle lobe of its lower lip is rectangular and extends back less than the horizontal line of the corner of the mouth; the posterior edge of the dorsal fin spine is smooth; the lateral line scales are 22- twenty three.

Another species of knotfish lives in the Irrawaddy River system adjacent to the Lancang River - T. (Tor) qiaojiensis. The middle lobe of its lower lip forms a transverse membrane, but the trailing edge is slightly protruding; the dorsal fin ray is soft and does not form a hard Spines; lateral line scales 29-30.

The knotfish is large in size, up to 8 kilograms, and has delicious meat. It is a common edible fish in the production area.
