Anchovy is a group of small fish. The largest individual does not exceed 200 mm, and most species are only 50-70 mm. The body is extremely flat and tall on both sides, and the body color is bright. Especially during the reproductive season, the bright body color of the male fish is paired with pearl stars, which makes it more attractive. The female fish drags a long ovipositing tube during the reproductive season, which makes it even more unique when accompanied by male fish.
Anchovy usually lives in still water bodies and in an environment with lush aquatic plants, and likes to swim in groups. Omnivorous, its food is aquatic plants, leaves of higher plants, algae, precipitated organic matter, zooplankton, aquatic insects and cladocerans. Most species reach sexual maturity at 1 year of age and have a longest lifespan of 4-5 years. The spawning period is from April to June, with peak spawning in mid-May. Eggs are laid in batches.
