Dongpo cuttlefish is the most famous and precious fish in Leshan, Sichuan. Since ancient times, it has been said that "the Jiayu (Dongpo cuttlefish) in Jiazhou (today's Leshan) is unparalleled in its freshness and deliciousness".

The whole body of Dongpo cuttlefish is jet black. According to legend, Dongpo cuttlefish was not originally black in color. During the Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo lived in a temple on Longhong Mountain in Leshan to study when he was young. He often went to the river to wash inkstones. The cuttlefish were addicted to his inkstone washing ink. Over time, his body gradually became as black as thick ink, and some even Subtly, he turned into a dragon and flew away. To this day, Longhong Mountain still retains the ruins of Su Dongpo's "Ink Washing Pool", with three eye-catching characters "Fish Transforms into a Dragon" engraved above the pool.

The Dongpo cuttlefish has a "dragon body and swallow tail" and "straight double fins". It has a particularly large sucker-shaped mouth on the ventral surface of its head. It has extremely strong adsorption capacity. When it is adsorbed on the rocks at the bottom of the river, it is simply "impregnable". It won't fall off even with rapid shocks. Local fishermen vividly call it "spring crawl" based on its unique ability to crawl from one stone to another and the time it appears in February and March.

During the breeding season of Dongpo cuttlefish, the fish schools are highly dense. The males and females often sit side by side on the bottom of the river with suction cups, standing upside down with their heads down and tails up. The poet described it as "stubbornly standing in the sand, as straight as a black flag tree." Male and female fish have a "deep love for each other" and are not afraid of firelight. They will not even dodge the deadly harpoon, allowing "the fisherman to harpoon it with fire at night". In order to reproduce offspring, even life is ignored.
