Recently, a new dinosaur fossil site was discovered in Chuanjie Township, Lufeng County, Yunnan Province, the famous dinosaur hometown in my country. Within the 400 square meters that have been excavated, preliminary statistics of the dinosaur fossils exposed include 1 carnivorous theropod dinosaur skeleton and 8 giant vegetarian sauropod dinosaur skeletons. One of the 19-meter-long skeletons has been preserved. Very complete. In addition, there are a large number of snake-necked turtle fossils. Taphonomic analysis shows that the fossils were formed after the bodies of these animals were transported after death, but the distance was not far, so the fossils were relatively well preserved.
The fossils are buried in a set of purple-red sandy mudstone, which geologically belongs to the bottom of the Upper Lufeng Formation of the middle to late Jurassic period. Scientists have determined that the theropod dinosaur is similar to the Yongchuanosaurus from the Upper Shaximiao Formation in Sichuan, while the sauropod belongs to the Mamenchisauridae family. It is speculated that the newly discovered dinosaurs should have lived in a similar era to the Sichuan dinosaurs mentioned above, that is, at the end of the middle Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago.
