Some facts about Poseidonosaurus

Due to the large size of the fossil, scientists once thought that the Poseidon dragon bone they discovered was an ancient tree. Poseidonosaurus lived during the Early Cretaceous Period approximately 118-110 million years ago. When the first Poseidonosaurus fossils were discovered in the United States in 1994, experts initially thought they might be tree fossils because of their size.

The fossils were ultimately thought to be vertebrae. The longest one is 1.4 meters, which means the total length of the sauropod's neck is estimated to be 12 meters.

Although this is long, it is slightly shorter than the 15-meter-long neck of Mamenchisaurus australis, which may be the longest dinosaur neck ever discovered.

But the estimate of the size of Poseidonosaurus may not be correct. The dinosaur's vertebrae are often compared to those of Brachiosaurus Gyrosaurus, itself once considered the largest known dinosaur. However, these dinosaurs were not as closely related as previously thought. Poseidonosaurus is now thought to be more closely related to Titanosaurus than to Brachiosaurus.
